Top 10 Features Windows Should Have... and Where to Get Them
William Drayton

There are many great things about the Windows operating system. However, there are several main features that Windows does not have, and that it should have, in order to truly be a great operating system. With these 10 features, the Windows OS would truly be one of the best systems in the world. Most of these features are found in the Apple and Linux operating systems, and by putting them into Windows, you could not only make your system much easier to use but dramatically increase your productivity at both work and home.

Virtual Desktops

A Virtual Desktop is a software-based manager that simulates many desktops by allowing you to organize windows into groups, each group being a different desktop. With virtual desktops, like with other operating systems, you will be able to get more out of your limited workspace. You can organize the desktop environment freely and clear up the clutter you usually see on your screen. A great use for this feature is separating your 'work' desktop from your 'play' desktop to avoid the distractions that can come from messages and other recreational applications. Virtual desktops can truly increase the value of the Windows operating system, and make it worth using.

Remote Access

Several of the other operating systems are easier to use because they have remote access. This means that the computer can be accessed from somewhere else. For instance, you would be able to work on your computer even if you were at home, or at work, or on your commute. You can use other computers or even your cell phone to have remote access of your own computer.

Post It® Type Notes for Windows

Reminder notes can be a great addition to your Windows system. This means exactly what it sounds like it -- as you're working on a computer or a program, you can create a note, type on it, and then stick it anywhere on your screen. These can be used in exactly the same way regular Post It® notes would be used. They can remind you of something or just give you extra information. You can even schedule pop-up reminders for any given note making them even more useful.

Screen Sharing

Something else that other operating systems have but Windows does not is screen sharing. This is great for any situation in which you need to collaborate with someone else -- such as a work situation or a group situation in general. Therefore, when you are doing screen sharing, all of the people who are included in the group would be able to have access to the same screen. You can have SharedView installed, and as long as others have the same application installed, they can access your screen in real time. In order to share your screen in SharedView, simply launch the application, click on start a new session, copy the invitation text and then paste it into an email to your recipient.

Virtual 3D Desktops

A virtual 3D desktop lets you not only see, but also access your desktop in 3D. This feature helps many to be better organized and is a refreshing new perspective on your desktop. Adding this feature to Windows would go a long way towards making it the best operating system out there.

Application Dock

Mac users (and many Linux users as well, depending which desktop environment they are using) have the advantage of the Object Dock. This is a place to put shortcuts, including to documents, in one convenient spot. You can customize this dock or use the Mac OS defaults -- either way this is a feature lets you get the most out of your operating system.

Automated Backups

Automated backups are one of the best features other operating systems have but Windows is strangely missing. Automated backups help you to ensure that your files and programs are safe no matter what. These are simple to set up and once they are, you won't have to think about them again. Automated backups give users security and peace of mind.

Tiled Window View

Windows users often experience the problem of screen crowding, making it hard to see everything as they would like. Tiled Window View would allow users to more easily find a particular open window, even on the busiest of desktops. Other operating systems have this feature built in -- thankfully, you can add this feature to your operating system.

ISO Burning

Unlike Mac OS or Linux, Windows can't burn CDs from CD images by default. By adding ISO burning, you'll be able to overcome this oversight by Windows and burn your CD images. This will make it a lot easier to use your computer and open up a lot of options to you.

Quick File Previews

Finally, it would be great to be able to browse through all of your files by date, wouldn't it? Mac OS allows this; but for Windows users, there is Quick File Preview which will make this possible. This will save you untold hours of scouring your hard drive for files.
