The Scent of Desperation
Marnie Pehrson
"I need money," you say? When you own your own business and run upon hard times, the natural tendency is to hold on tighter. We buck up, work harder, and burn the candle at both ends. When it comes to work, "more" isn't always the best solution for the "I need money" dilemma. A frenzied pace produces shoddy work and customers and prospects sense the panic.
Desperation emits a scent! You may think you're hiding it from customers, but you can't. It wafts through the air, through emails, into social media outlets and across the miles.
It might look like:
- hitting your list with every affiliate program you can find
- creating sloppy products or services
- sidetracking into products or services outside your core niche
- forgetting about what your customers really need and looking only at what you want (money)
- assuming you're so important that other people should pay you grand amounts of money for less than quality products.
"But I need the money!" the stressed business person might cry. "I have to pay the bills." True, you do. But operating out of desperation and hanging on with white-knuckled panic is not the way to go. Customers run in the opposite direction when they smell desperation. That's why the old mantra in love is "play hard to get." Nobody likes to be pursued with desperation. We automatically assume there must be something wrong with the person.
There is a sweet spot where money flows. The worse you need it, the less likely it will arrive. Money seems to sense desperation as much as people do!
What is the answer?
- Stay calm. Trust that everything will work out in the end. Somewhere there is an answer, a way through.
- Stick with your core passion. Resist the temptation to go off on tangents that are outside it. All that glitters is not gold!
- Step back and look at your business with fresh eyes. While it's not wise to do things outside your core niche just to make money, it is wise to expand your thinking within the realm of your core message. Stepping back might be taking a couple days off work or going away for the weekend. You may think you can't afford to step away, but the truth is you can't afford NOT to.
- Avoid putting your workhorse blinders on. When you go into a mundane routine of cranking out products or going through every-day routines without taking time to step back and look at where you're going, you waste tons of energy and miss golden opportunities.
- Be grateful for what you have. Make a list of the things that are right in your world. Don't forget to list those lovely intangibles like family, health and friends. Be grateful for every sale and every scrap of income you generate - no matter how small. Look for the good and you'll attract more of it!
- Work from a place of inspiration. Inspiration can lead you to the perfect solution. Instead of scattering your energy with a shotgun approach, inspiration helps you hone in like a laser beam. With an inspired laser beam, you'll produce amazing results with less effort and stress. What's more, it will be something you can get passionate about.
Passion has a scent too! It's the complete opposite of desperation. People want to be around those who are passionate about what they do.
